The principal investigator, Stuart Pivar, was born in Brooklyn, NY, and having studied at Brooklyn Technical High School and receiving a B.A., Chem. from Hofstra University, would become a professional chemist, chemical engineer and inventor. He was the Chairman and CEO of Chem-Tainer Industries, which Pivar founded in 1959. Chem-Tainer is a pioneer manufacturer of rotationally molded plastic chemical containment vessels, based on his patented processes. In 1977 he invented an electric car which failed to capture the imagination of a yet to be enlightened American public.

Pivar’s close friendship with the late Stephen Jay Gould in the 1990s led to his professional and scientific interests in biology. These include the establishment of the Protease Inhibitor Labs at SUNY, Stonybrook (1995–1999), Regenerative Medicine Labs (therapeutic cloning, 1998–2002) and the Human Blueprint Project (1998–2008).

Embryo Geometry Lab is the successor of a continuum of an endeavor into morphogenesis beginning in 1995 under the tutelage of Stephen Jay Gould. The effort was begun to discover the non-genetic cause of biological organogenesis. Numbers of scientists and scientific illustrators have participated in the intervening decades, resulting in a number of significant relevant publications, these under the rubric of Synthetic Life Lab. A recent discovery includes the geometrical origin of embryonic patterning.

The lab’s research is supported by a substantial collection of over anatomical specimens.
